The Epidemiology Department
The Epidemiology Department is a diverse and dynamic multi-disciplinary international team of approximately 20 individuals which includes three administrators, 17 epidemiologists and biostatisticians as well as a network of international consultants. The Epidemiology Department conducts projects in applied research, training, scientific communication and service activities mainly in the field of infectious diseases. The Epidemiology Department has an international reputation in conducting vaccine effectiveness studies, a variety of observational epidemiological study designs (e.g. cross-sectional, case-control and cohort studies) and in the coordination of epidemiological networks. It has a strong profile in providing guidance at national and international levels as well as the development and delivery of training courses.
Applied research
Undertaking research activities in the field of vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) aiming at measuring vaccine effectiveness and impact of vaccination programmes.
VPD of interest so far include: COVID-19, Influenza, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Pneumococcal diseases, Pertussis, Rotavirus, HPV, Varicella and Herpes Zoster, Ebola, Meningitis, and Malaria.
Training activities
Developing training curriculum and training material in the field of applied epidemiology and runs related training activities.
Conducting short and long-term face-to-face or virtual training sessions, based on interactive sessions, computerised case studies, and long-term training programmes (FETP).
Scientific advice
Critical appraisal of studies at the request of various partners (e.g. malaria/ Ebola vaccines, narcolepsy studies etc).
Supporting its partners in the field of written and oral scientific communication.
Services
Providing support to Public Health partners for the development and management of surveillance systems, data analysis, monitoring systems assessment, long-term programme management surveillance of communicable diseases (protocol, laboratory, information technology and statistics). Current and recent projects include sentinel surveillance of hepatitis B and C treatment uptake and outcomes, ‘One-Health’ approaches to prevent antimicrobial resistance, surveillance using electronic health records of a number of conditions (severe acute respiratory infections, bloodstream infections, sexually transmitted infections) and pandemic preparedness.
Mission
Epiconcept is looking for a Senior Epidemiologist to participate in and further develop the department activities in the areas of:
Applied research;
Service;
Scientific advice; and
Training.
The development of the Epidemiology Department consists in:
Developing departmental expertise in eHealth, the use of electronic health registries (EHR) for public health and research, data science and the application of artificial intelligence for public and research purposes;
Contributing to the development of new methods in epidemiology (e.g. collaborate with the Data Science unit to define the plan of analysis of large public health open databases);
Contributing to sustaining and developing existing projects as well as extending departmental activities to new projects;
Develop and deliver training courses in epidemiology, data science and wider public health; and
Collaborating with other partners in order to develop joint activities.
Core duties
Team and project management
Coordination / supervision / analysis of large international multicentre studies
Supervision of team members including coaching and mentoring
Business development
Identify source of funding for dedicated projects;
Coordination and response to call for tenders and request for proposals; and
Promotion of departmental activities and networking.
Budget monitoring
Follow-up of objectives and budget, of the involved projects.
Scientific coordination
Serve as scientific lead of international studies;
Organise, facilitate and lead international meetings; and
Coach specific scientific activities.
Communication
Organise and disseminate, in coordination with the head of the epidemiology department, scientific oral and written communication.
Profil
Education & Experience
Minimum 15 years of experience in public health with extensive experience of both epidemiology and data science;
A PhD, or equivalent experience, preferably in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics or related health subject;
Evidence of ability to direct and lead research projects and collaborations;
Evidence of significant scientific output and publications;
Evidence of the ability to attract and manage funds to support activities;
Experience of leading and managing scientific research teams; and
A strong knowledge and experience of eHealth, EHR, data science and artificial intelligence and awareness of their implications for epidemiological studies
Previous field epidemiology training involving learning by doing (e.g. FETP, EIS or EPIET or similar) is desired.

Ability to define and promote strategic vision in accordance with the overall strategy of the epidemiology department of Epiconcept; and
Capacity to identify sources of funding, establish and follow up on budgets, and to achieve long term goals.
Scientific / technical
Ability to develop scientific activity compliant with highest ethical standards;
Understanding of the current challenges in epidemiological surveillance of infectious diseases and applied research evolving methods and context;
Capacity to critically appraise and write scientific articles;
Excellent oral and written communication skills (congress, advocacy, scientific articles, report, etc.);
Strong interest in epidemiologic methods for observational studies (cohort, case-control);
Data management and data analysis skills;
Health data specificities knowledge (ethical and legal); and
Excellent training and supervisory skills.
Team and budget management
Excellent planning and organisational skills (capacity to coordinate activities with the other Epiconcept department's, capacity to integrate a multi-disciplinary, multi-national, highly motivated and competent team of epidemiologists, with strong personalities);
Demonstrated financial management knowledge (budget follow up and financial reporting);
Strong leadership skills;
Strong mentoring / coaching capacity; and
Intercultural skills.
International context
Knowledge of European Union and international institutions;
Ability to negotiate with international organizations (ECDC, EC, MOH, PHI, US CDC, WHO, EMA, EC, etc.);
Ability to create and coordinate international scientific networks for multicentre studies and public health programmes;
Excellent level of English (oral, written). Good level of French is desirable; and
Ability to undertake frequent international travel.
Remuneration
Full time permanent post with a remuneration commensurate with experience
